General requirements
The Italian student visa is applicable for students who wish to study bachelor’s, master’s, PhD, diploma courses. Other than studying, students who want to do an internship or training can apply for an Italian study visa. Here is the list of requirements that students need:
- No objection letter from your university or institute from where you are currently enrolled.
- Signature on internship agreement between the company located in Italy and the trainee.
- There should be a clear statement on the duration of the course and enrolment proof by the Italian school of education.
- There should be a Declaration of Value (Dichiarazione di Valore) of the applicant’s educational certificates duly signed by the Consular office of the Consulate General.

Visa processing time
The visa processing time for Italy takes around 4-6 weeks before you choose to go. Make sure you book your visa interview in advance as your application may take longer than 1-3 weeks.
Stay back options and work permits in Italy
For a stay back option in Italy students have to complete a PhD or level 2 master’s program. After completing masters in Italy the stay back is referred to as “permesso di Soggiorno” translated as a residence permit. The duration of stay back is allowed for 6-12 months. For international students, the only relevant option for staying back is to complete a masters and PhD and look for jobs for an extension.
Working rights on student visa
International Students can work –
- Part-time work permit (20 hours per week and 1040 hours per year).
- Full time (40 hrs per week during scheduled holidays)
Visa conditions
- Should have a travel document valid for a minimum of 3 months after getting a visa.
- Pre-enrolment and enrollment in a university course.
- Proof that you are financially stable (at least € 448,07 per month for the academic year and a total of € 5824,91 per year)
- Proof that you have accommodation in Italy to stay for a short period or long period.
Intakes
There are two intakes:
- First academic year is generally starts in the month of September and or October.
- The second intake starts in February.
The accurate starting and ending dates of semester is different in various universities. Each semester ends up in twenty weeks in which 14 weeks are of teaching period and 6 weeks are of exams period.
